Service Notes for the 1941 "X" Series of Television sets (printed in 1942)
According to Steve McVoy, the pre-war Du Mont televisions
used (4) different types of CRTs:
1) 114-9-T tube without
intensifier
2) 114-9-T tube with intensifier connection on the side
3) 14AP4 tube with intensifier connection in the base
4) K1003P4 tube as a postwar replacement
One of the toughest things to document are the differences
between the various pre-war Du Mont sets. Steve offers his explanation of
these differences:
-
The late 1938 early-1939 sets used the CRT without
the intensifier. These are the Model 180-series, although Harry Poster refers to
the table model as an 'Model 80' in his price guide.
-
Mid 1939-1940 models 180, 181, 182, 183 are the
same as above, except they have slightly different knob layout and use an
intensifier CRT.
-
The 1941 "X" Series -- Models 180X, 181X, 182X and
183X have a different knob arrangement, and include a special 'mode switch', so
that the viewer can switch between the original 441-line and newly adopted
525-line systems. Without this switch, the viewer would have to manually
adjust the Horizontal Hold to lock-in the picture on the screen, if they were
changing channels between a 441-line broadcast and a 525-line broadcast.
