Here is an example of an earlier 1931 Jenkins mechanical scanning disc TV set, in home use:

This clearly illustrates the need for two pieces of equipment in the early days.  The TV audio receiver and neon lamp driver, which sits on top of the (video) display unit.   Click scan to enlarge.
